This piece is one of the more popular of Anguspaul’s current exhibit. It features a life-like subject matter with a twist. The artist planned for 8 Seconds to appeal to the average “horse and cow painting” enthusiast. He first painted a very beautiful but ordinary rider atop an ordinary horse but felt that the result was far too mundane. His solution was to add splashes of color to the top and bottom of the painting to give the subject a more interesting setting. The color along the top and bottom do more than just frame the rider- they also contribute to the sense of movement in the painting. The liveliness of the horse and rider is engaging, evident, and quickly draws in the eye but as your eyes move outwards toward the frame of color the pace changes to a more peaceful wind-like movement. 8 Seconds may have started out as a simple idea but the result is far from it.
