Another week has passed and a new Piece of the Week has been chosen by the SEAD Gallery staff. “Black/ White” is one of the last pieces that Jennifer Christy created in the “Push Play” exhibit. She said that this was one of the pieces that really challenged her to simply push play on her creative freedom. Her only rule applied to this painting was that a paint brush was not allowed to touch the piece. The end result was this mixed-media-layered intricacy.
She began “Black/White” with a rope and glue on a large canvas. The circular rope was followed by paint squeezed out of its tube. Jennifer used her fingers to push the paint across the canvas, creating layers of shapes and rich textures. The purity of the paint from the tube creates vivid separation from each shape and alludes to a magnified section of an abstract piece from her artwork. The clean simplicity of “Black/White” invites its viewers to follow each line and enjoy the result of a piece that crumbled the creative block of a talented artist.
