Looking back on last week’s Author Talk still makes us giddy. Maybe it’s Jay’s natural charisma or his encyclopedic knowledge of the Jazz and Blues origins in Texas, but there was something in that room that drew a group of strangers together as they listened to this man talk about his passions.
Jay’s storytelling ability is undeniable. He speaks of these giants of the Jazz movement like they are his long-time friends. He told us about how bands formed, trouble was made, and artists sold their souls to the Devil for musical ability (he could neither confirm nor deny that story). We also learned the origins of Deep Ellum and how it became the cultural epicenter that it is today. Jay is full of knowledge and passion about the subject and soon hopes to finish a book about Blues and plantations in the Brazos Valley.
If you want to read more of Jay’s work, his book Deep Ellum: The Other Side of Dallas is available on Amazon or you can read his essays on the Old Art Guy website.
Our next Author Talk will be held on Thursday, August 17th. Keep checking back for updates as we reveal our next featured author soon!
