Another summer month passes with a blazing sun and pleasant air conditioning. As the summer comes to end, the SEAD Gallery and Bookshop has planned a special First Friday to celebrate. Join us from 6-9 PM the evening of August 4th to celebrate the end of summer with good community and good art.
Accompanying the usual cookies and tea, SEAD will be unveiling a new addition to our bookshop: a reading room with wall-to-wall bookshelves overflowing with unique books ranging from Marilyn Monroe’s biography to the cultural understandings of African tribes. We also will be revealing a section dedicated to Texas A&M University Press books.
The Texas A&M University Press was founded in 1974 and partners with countless universities besides those associated with Texas A&M. They publish and sell books along with hosting publishing and editing seminars. Their section in the SEAD Bookshop will contain a variety of books and genres that they themselves have published or are hosting for smaller publishers around Texas. We are excited for this new opportunity to partner with an institution that aids in the literary pursuits of our community.
Though the new addition to the bookshop is an event in itself, SEAD is also excited to announce that Hailey Herrera will be answering questions about how she creates her work for the First Friday attendees starting at 7 PM. Hailey’s new collection “Calligraphy + Color: Watermedia Abstracts” is currently featured in SEAD’s main gallery, and on Friday everyone will be able to learn the secrets to her artistry.
In the past, Hailey has focused on watercolor nature scenes, but her recent exhibit explores watermedia abstracts. She combines watercolor paints and wax to create these incredible combinations. It will be a rare experience to learn how she creates such work.
Lastly, we are excited to host Ambassadors from the Noonday Collection in the foyer of the Federal Building where they will be launching their Fall line of jewelery and fashion accessories. Noonday partners with Artisan businesses across the globe that share a passion for building a flourishing world. They develop these businesses through fair trade, empowering them to grow sustainably and to create dignified jobs for people who need them.
